Superhero films based on Marvel and DC Comics characters have not only dominated the box office in recent years, but will likely continue to do so for many more to come. However, movies based on non-superhero comics have been successful in the past as well, particularly Edgar Wright’s Scott Pilgrim vs. The World.

Now, another fan-favorite comic not featuring a caped hero (though one character does wear a coonskin cap) will be coming to the big screen. A new report indicates 20th Century Fox is adapting the Boom! Studios comic Lumberjanes to a live-action film.

The Wrap is reporting Fox has tapped Will Widger, whose major writing credit includes the 2014 Black List script The Munchkin, to pen the live-action Lumberjanes feature. Created by Shannon Watters, Grace Ellis and Noelle Stevenson and illustrated by Brooke A. Allen, Lumberjanes follows a group of five girls at a scout camp where they battle strange creatures and supernatural beings.

Boom! Studios executives Ross Richie and Stephen Christy will produce the film with Adam Yoelin (Two Night Stand), while Fox executives Kira Goldberg and Ryan Jones will oversee the project. Goldberg selected Widger’s take on Lumberjanes; the studio and producers are already discussing female directors they would like to target once the script is finished.

Lumberjanes was originally planned as a limited eight-part series, but due strong sales and critical acclaim, it transitioned to ongoing. Following Jo, April, Mal, Molly, and Ripley as they attend Miss Quinzella Thiskwin Penniquiqul Thistle Crumpet’s Camp for Hardcore Lady Types, Lumberjanes is a story of friendship and adventure comparable to Cartoon Network’s Adventure Time.

However, since Lumberjanes is such a popular series, it may be difficult for fans to envision a live-action film based on the comic. The upcoming Jem and the Holograms film seems to trade the fun of its ’80s cartoon roots for a grounded story about the price of fame and success. With the Lumberjanes storyline featuring possessed boy scouts, arm wrestling matches with living statues, and feuding Greek gods, it’s difficult to picture a grounded live-action adaptation.

That being said, the relationships between Jo, April, Mal, Molly, and Ripley serve as the central focus of Lumberjanes around which the more supernatural aspects of the series revolve. Surely, the friendships of the Lumberjanes are truly what fans hope will make the jump from book to live-action.

Whether Widger and the rest of those at Fox are successful in this endeavor remains to be seen. Of course, we’ll need to know more (much more) about the Lumberjanes live-action film before we pass any real judgement.
