We love a good mashup around here and the more awesome the things being put together, the more awesome the combined creation. So, when you take the recently great Mad Max: Fury Road and combine it with the always great Star Wars (we mean that in the classic sense) the result is even greater that the sum of its parts. The conceit of the idea seems to be this. What if everything that happened in Fury Road didn’t take place on a post-apocalyptic Earth, but rather the desert planet of Tatooine. There are two moons in the sky, Sandpeople taking shots at the caravan, and at one point Max Rockatansky nearly falls in the Sarlacc pit. Just your normal day on the home planet of Luke Skywalker. Honestly, if Tatooine had been the home to the film we’re pretty sure it would have looked exactly like this. We’re not sure how one of the War Boys got their hands on a TIE Fighter but we’re not complaining. The only real problem we see is that the car door was going to do nothing to protect Max if Furiosa really had a lightsaber. He must die early in this movie.
Technically the trailer is very well put together. The moons of Tatooine or the Death Star hanging in the sky look like they belong there. Furiosa’s lightsaber causes a glow against her skin when ignited. All of the Star Wars effects are integrated into Fury Road seamlessly. Nothing looks like it doesn’t belong. From a logistics standpoint, we’re really not sure how the modified cars of Road would ever stand up to the X-Wings or TIE Fighters. The couple of scenes which show fighter vs. car go exactly as you’d expect they would. The car goes down pretty quickly. We don’t really see Furiosa being successful in this version of the movie. She brought a truck to a dogfight.
While this is far from the first trailer that combines two things that we’ll never get a chance to see together, what sets it apart is that we actually want to see these things together. Most of the time these sorts of fan made creations show off great editing, by giving the impression that you’re seeing two people talking who never had a conversation on screen. You never see them in the same frame however. Here, you really see Snow Speeders (Desert Speeders?) flying over the caravan of vehicles.
