Movies that have real life couples starring as a pair in the central role are not uncommon. From Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman in Eyes Wide Shut, to Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn in Overboard, there’s a whole wealth of them to chose from. And of course, there’s also Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie in Mr & Mrs Smith.

The pair famously met on set, and the chemistry we got on screen was sizzling. The result? The film did very well at the box office, taking $478 million worldwide. The media and fans alike still can’t get enough of this couple, who married in 2014, and are now about to star together again, in the drama By the Sea. The second trailer for the film can be viewed, above.

Written and directed by Angelina Jolie-Pitt, By the Sea stars Pitt as a writer, Roland, who is married to Vanessa (Jolie). In an attempt to solve their marriage crisis, the pair head to a 1970s French resort, hoping to rekindle what they once had. However, their marriage appears to be crumbling rapidly – and as the couple encounter fellow travellers on vacation (played by Mélanie Laurent, Niels Arestrup, Melvil Poupaud, and Richard Bohringer), their crisis only deepens.

The first trailer for By the Sea was deliberately kept vague; Jolie has said she likes trailers that don’t give away much of what’s to come in the film, and it really does make a welcome change. The second trailer follows suit. They say a picture paints a thousand words – and Jolie certainly lets the stunning scenery and compelling visuals take center stage here, because not a word is spoken throughout.

If the first trailer showed a marriage in crisis then this one surely shows a marriage in full on melt-down. There is a strong hint of voyeurism, which Jolie has also previously alluded to. Is Vanessa spying on her husband? Has she caught him cheating? Is that what leads to the fighting, the rage and the agonizing tears? What of the other characters? How do they fit into the story, and affect this couple’s relationship? Of course, we don’t know, and that is the total beauty of this By The Sea trailer.

The music, interspersed with that one, lone sob, expertly highlights the bleak and hard hitting drama set against an idyllic background. One can imagine that filming such scenes must have taken its toll on Pitt and Jolie as a couple – but if this trailer is anything to go by, they’ve delivered it expertly.

Jolie goes from strength to strength. Her acting has always been phenomenal to watch, but now she’s really showcasing her talents behind the camera too. By the Sea will be the follow-up to Unbroken, her directorial debut, and she also has Africa and Netflix drama, First They Killed my Father, in the pipeline too.

Given the vagueness of the trailers, it’s possibly too early to say whether By the Sea could be in contention for any awards – but, if the strength and impact this trailer has is any reflection on the film itself, it seems almost a safe bet.

By The Sea opens in the U.S. on November 13th, 2015.
