Microsoft's Surface Book, also referred to as the ultimate laptop, is now available in Microsoft's stores and at a number of other retailers, but should you decide to buy one online, it could take longer than expected to get it.

Basically, because of the huge demand for the Surface Book, you have to wait up to 7 weeks to get one, but in case you want the best of the best and decide to go for the 1 TB version, the device won't arrive at your door sooner than January 2016.

Panos Panay, the man in charge of devices at Microsoft, says in an interview with Wired that demand is so big for the Surface Book that it simply can't cope with it, and the company is actually selling more laptops than it can make. That's why the shipping times are so huge right now, he explains, promising to address the problem and make more laptops available as soon as possible.

First Microsoft laptop ever

The Surface Book is Microsoft's first laptop in history, and although it shows Redmond's commitment to the hardware industry, it's also a worrying step for OEMs.

Companies that have until now worked together with Microsoft to bring Windows devices to the market are now becoming direct rivals, and both sides are now competing for the same buyers, although Microsoft claims that it actually targets customers looking for premium laptops and tablets.

It's no secret that a number of PC makers have expressed their concerns regarding Microsoft's investments in hardware, but on the other hand, the software giant claims that it actually helps the ecosystem by keeping users on Windows.

Obviously, the huge sales that the Surface Book is experiencing can't be good news for partners, who may have lost an important share of customers, so it remains to be seen if partners are ready to break up with Microsoft or not just because of the increased focus on hardware.
