Video game developer DICE and publisher Electronic Arts are ready to disappoint fans of the coming Mirror’s Edge Catalyst by announcing that the game is being delayed and will only be launched on May 24 of next year in the United States and May 27 in Europe.

The announcement is made on the official site by Sara Jansson, who serves as a senior producer on the project, and she explains that the two companies are aiming to deliver the highest quality level possible.

The extra months of development will mean that DICE has the time required to make sure that the game is entertaining, impressive and memorable and manages to deliver on the expectations of the fan base.

Jansson adds, "Mirror’s Edge Catalyst has received an incredible response from fans around the world over the past months. You’ve been eager to see the return of Faith and the unique style and gameplay that only Mirror’s Edge can create. Witnessing your positive reactions has been amazing motivation for me and the rest of our passionate team at DICE."

The new Faith adventure was initially supposed to arrive in late February, and many fans are already saying that they are disappointed with the delay but hope that the game mechanics will improve because of it.

DICE is not ready to say which element of Mirror’s Edge Catalyst is at the moment not running as initially expected and whether any core feature might be scrapped in the future.

Mirror’s Edge Catalyst will be offered on the PC, the Xbox One from Microsoft and the PlayStation 4 from Sony.

Faith will explore a fully open world

Mirror’s Edge Catalyst is created using the Frostbite 3 engine and will offer a world that features no loading times and gives gamers the freedom to move around as they see fit, using free running mechanics to get from one objective to another.

The new title is neither a reboot or a prequel and DICE aims to deliver a story campaign that offers more information about the world and main character Faith.

Neither Rhianna Pratchett nor any other member of the team that created the first installment in the series is working on the new project, which has caused some concern among the player base.

In addition to narrative-driven missions, gamers will also be able to perform side quests and to take part in races and time trials.

Faith is no longer able to use weapons in any way, but she has a new system of melee moves that give her options when enemies corner her, although moving fast is her primary means of escape.

Mirror’s Edge Catalyst will also introduce a new multiplayer system that will allow gamers to affect the world of others via their actions, although no conflict will take place between characters.

Leaderboards are also planned.

Fans of the world of Mirror's Edge who find the wait too long can pick up a comic book, called Exordium, which is published by Dark Horse and acts as a prequel for the events of the game.
