Since then, Bay has returned to direct each of the Transformers sequels, including last summer’s box office hit Transformers: Age of Extinction. The next film in the franchise, Transformers 5, is expected to hit the big screens in 2017.
Prior to and following the release of Age of Extinction, there was some questioning of whether or not Bay would again step up to helm Transformers 5, with the director himself adding fuel to the speculation. Now, star of Transformers: Age of Extinction Mark Wahlberg – who will return for Transformers 5 and 6 – has weighed in on the likelihood of the director returning.
While speaking with Collider, Wahlberg said he thinks Bay will ultimately end up directing Transformers 5. However, the actor admitted he knows little about the progress of the next film in the franchise, “just that Akiva [Goldsman] and those guys are starting to write and break stories.” Wahlberg added that he will likely meet with Bay once they each finish filming their respective movies – Bay, his Benghazi drama 13 hours and Wahlberg, Deepwater Horizon.
Before Age of Extinction hit theaters, there was uncertainty about who would take over the franchise following the release, whether it would be Bay or a new team. A few months following the film’s premiere, the director said he might “pass the baton” to a different filmmaker in an effort to take his career in a new direction, though Bay is still on board to executive produce Transformers 5.
However, in addition to the upcoming fifth and sixth installment of Transformers, Paramount Pictures is growing the franchise into a shared cinematic universe, employing a whole team of writers. Rumors concerning these new films include a possible Bumblebee solo feature as well as a prequel set on the Autobots’ home planet Cybertron.
Those moviegoers that have grown tired of Bay’s entries to the Transformers series and hope to see something new from the robots in disguise may look forward to the rest of the shared universe outings. But, fans of the previous films will likely be excited by the prospect of Bay returning to helm Transformers 5, perhaps especially if he takes certain criticisms under advisement.
That being said, Bay has not yet officially signed on to direct Transformers 5. Wahlberg, who has also worked with the director on 2013’s Pain & Gain, may have insight into whether not Bay is leaning toward returning to helm the sequel. However, a director for Transformers 5 likely won’t be confirmed until after the script is finished – Bay or otherwise.
