As if voicing Princess Peach in the upcoming Super Mario Bros. movie wasn't a great enough gig already, Anya Taylor-Joy reveals that the job has some amazing perks. Taylor-Joy's star has risen rapidly over the last five years since she first appeared in Robert Eggers' folk psychological horror film The Witch. Since then, the actress has starred in a series of successful movies including Thoroughbreds, Split, and Emma. However, the actress garnered international critical acclaim when she played genius chess champion Beth Harmon in Netflix's 2020 hit series, The Queen's Gambit. Taylor-Joy is currently starring in Edgar Wright's time travel murder-mystery film, Last Night in Soho.

Recently, Taylor-Joy was announced as part of an all-star voice cast for the animated Super Mario Bros. movie on the way from Illumination and Nintendo. Taylor-Joy will voice Princess Peach, the monarch of the Mushroom Kingdom. Peach first appeared as a character in Mario games beginning with the first Super Mario Bros. in 1985. Taylor-Joy joins Chris Pratt and Charlie Day as the voices of Mario and Luigi, respectively. The cast of comedians also includes Jack Black as Bowser, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong, Fred Armisen as Cranky Kong, Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek, and Sebastian Maniscalco as Foreman Spike. Charles Martinet, who voices Mario, Luigi, Wario, and others in the games, will appear in a cameo.

In a recent interview with ET, Taylor-Joy revealed that the Super Mario Bros. movie job requirements are indeed every gamer's dream. In order to prepare for her role, the actress has naturally had to familiarize herself with the iconic video game character. As a result, Taylor-Joy has spent hours playing Super Mario Bros. as "homework." Read her comments on her preparation below:

"Oh, it is so much fun. We started doing little bits and pieces of it already. The greatest part is that I get to say I am doing homework or work or research just by gaming, which is pretty great."

The upcoming adaptation is the third Super Mario Bros. movie to be released after previous unsuccessful anime and live-action versions, including the 1993 Super Mario Bros film starring John Leguizamo and Bob Hoskins. The movie is currently on track to be released in December 2022, but specific plot details are yet to be revealed. Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic are directing, with a screenplay written by Matthew Fogel.

From the sound of it, Taylor-Joy doesn't have any plans to begin a second career as a Twitch streamer anytime soon. Still, it's amusing to imagine her and the rest of the cast playing Super Mario Bros. as "research." While a Super Mario Bros. movie role may sound like the perfect excuse to play video games for a living, Taylor-Joy is clearly serious about learning her character's backstory. As she says, the game's fan base is "intense." And while a book or play adaptation would mean simply reading the text, video game characters are developed over many years in different versions and storylines that sometimes contradict one another, making the task of research a more complicated. At least, however, Taylor-Joy is having a lot of fun preparing for her Super Mario Bros. role, and audiences can't wait to see it.
