Edgar Wright said the script for Baby Driver 2 is officially finished. After making his first film, A Fistful of Fingers, at the age of 21, Wright became a household name in the UK for his work on the cult sitcom Spaced starring Simon Pegg. The two would eventually collaborate on some of Britain's most critically and commercially successful comedies of the 21st century, including the Three Flavours Cornetto trilogy consisting of Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, and The World's End. These movies attracted Hollywood's attention, leading him to work on Scott Pilgrim vs. the World and Ant-Man. However, the MCU entry saw him leave the director's chair following creative differences.

Wright's biggest American hit was undoubtedly Baby Driver, the 2017 action-comedy starring Ansel Elgort as a wunderkind getaway driver in Atlanta who continually listens to music to cope with severe tinnitus. The film, which Wright had been developing for over 20 years, grossed $226 million worldwide and received critical acclaim for its soundtrack and slick action sequences. Its success as an original movie untethered from any existing IP affirmed Wright as his own unique brand, and the director looks to be setting his sights on returning to Baby's jukebox underworld.

While promoting his new documentary, The Sparks Brothers, Edgar Wright told Variety that he has officially completed the Baby Driver 2 screenplay. He's gone through three drafts of the script while juggling multiple other projects, some written and some still in the development phase. The director humorously addressed fans' online inquiries about the sequel by noting how the COVID-19 pandemic has prevented him from moving forward on Baby Driver 2.

"It's written. I've written like three drafts of it. You get fans on social media asking, 'what's happening with blah blah blah,' and it's like, 'You know there's a global pandemic, right?"

In addition to his new documentary on the pop-rock duo, Wright recently finished his highly anticipated horror film Last Night in Soho. Starring Anya Taylor-Joy and Thomasin McKenzie, the film follows an up-and-coming fashion designer who's transported back to a strange and mysterious 1960s London. It was initially scheduled for September 25, 2020, theatrical release before being pushed back twice to October 22, 2021, due to the pandemic. Focus Features seems intent on sticking to a theatrical release, as the combination of Wright's diehard fanbase and Taylor-Joy's star status following The Queen's Gambit indicates the movie could be a substantial box-office success.

Baby Driver 2 may end up being an even bigger box-office hit given the ravenous reception to the first movie. Still, there are certainly reasons to be hesitant considering how sequels, in general, are challenging to pull off. Comedy directors seem to have a particularly hard time, with many sequels like The Hangover Part III and Hot Tub Time Machine 2 viewed as poorly conceived cash grabs. Still, Wright's strong track record demonstrates he has no interest in committing years of hard work to something he's not personally invested in, indicating that Baby Driver 2 will be a worthwhile escape.
