Although Thanos and Kang the Conqueror seem to be the MCU’s greatest villains thus far, Eternals will feature antagonists on a far greater scale than either of them. The Eternals are a team of cosmic beings, created by the God-like Celestials to defend Earth from Deviants. Having lived on Earth for 7,000 years by the events of the upcoming film, the Eternals avoided interference in Earth conflicts, even when Thanos wiped out half of the universe, but the threat of Deviants will force them into action.

Thanos, the Mad Titan, was the antagonist of the first three phases of the MCU, now called The Infinity Saga. Thanos successfully eliminated half of all life in the universe in Avengers: Infinity War, but The Avengers used the Infinity Stones to restore everybody in Avengers: Endgame. Marvel’s Loki introduced Kang the Conqueror, a deadly variant of a brilliant human scientist (He Who Remains). Thanos was a superlative threat on a universal scale, and Kang may harm multiple timelines, affecting the entire multiverse, but the villains in Eternals will be on an even greater scale.

In the mainstream Marvel comics universe, Celestials are the first sapient beings in all of existence and are treated as God-like beings. The MCU’s iteration of Celestials will be explored in Eternals, with the heroes facing off against Kro, a Deviant leader. Considering the previous appearances and information about the MCU’s Celestials, they and the Deviants are powerful on a scale far greater than Thanos or Kang, having near-omnipotent power over every timeline and universe.

Guardians of the Galaxy provided some exposition regarding the Celestials. The location known as Knowhere is a colony situated inside the massive severed head of a Celestial. The Collector explains that the Infinity Stones, supremely powerful objects formed from The Big Bang, were used by Celestials to rule over mortal beings. A living Celestial, Ego, is the antagonist of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, where some of the limitations of Celestials are explained, along with a demonstration of the unfathomable power.

In the Marvel comics universe, Celestials were responsible for creating the multiverse itself, shattering reality into infinite variations of itself. If the MCU version of Celestials follows the source material, this alone will put them on a greater scale than Thanos or Kang. Their offshoot beings, the Deviants, are a great enough threat for the Eternals to become involved in Earth’s affairs when they’d ignored Thanos and presumably ignore Kang.

One Celestial, Arishem the Judge, was shown in Guardians of the Galaxy, using the Power Stone to wipe out entire worlds with ease. Arishem has been featured quite prominently in the Eternals’ marketing, implying that he commanded the ancient team to only protect Earth from Deviants. With a runtime that nears three hours, Eternals will most likely delve deep into the lore behind the MCU’s new villains, and show why they’re on a far greater scale than even Thanos and Kang.
