Director James Gunn responds to the new revelation that Superman and other DC heroes exist in the MCU. Thanks to his work on the Guardians of the Galaxy movies, Gunn is a major creative force within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In recent years, though, he's stepped over to the DCEU to helm The Suicide Squad, an R-rated reworking of the titular villain/anti-hero team. Gunn has additional DC projects in the works, including January's HBO Max spin-off series Peacemaker.

Right now, Gunn is hard at work preparing to begin filming Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, which is currently scheduled for release in May 2023. So far, Gunn is the only director who can stay they've made movies for both the MCU and the DCEU, which makes him uniquely suited to react to the latest news coming out of the former. A recent teaser for next month's Eternals revealed Superman does in fact exist within the MCU, much to the amusement of fans. The moment came when Phastos' (Brian Tyree Henry) young son thought Ikaris (Richard Madden) was the Man of Steel because of their similar skillset.

On Saturday afternoon, Gunn joked about the news on social media after hearing Eternals director Chloé Zhao's explanation for the Superman reference. Zhao clarified that Superman doesn't exist as a real figure in the MCU, but as a fictional comic book character. She then joked "you never know" in regards to something else, and Gunn ran with it, replying, "I’m pretty sure Chloe is just afraid of giving away the post credits scene here." He attached a GIF of fans dressed as Superman, Spider-Man, Captain America, and Batman dancing alongside each other.

It's safe to say that while Marvel called Avengers: Endgame one of the biggest crossovers of all time, an MCU/DCEU mashup would blow that out of the water. It would certainly be a lot of fun, seeing heroes like Superman and Ikaris interact, or even Batman and Captain America. Of course, fans probably shouldn't expect to see a movie of that caliber any time soon, since both franchises are pretty dedicated to carving out their own paths.

With superheroes looming large in virtually every aspect of pop culture these days, it isn't surprising that some projects would end up referencing the others. Marvel and DC are the biggest names in the superhero genre today, and Eternals has found a way to tie them together... somewhat. For now, that's all that connects the two beyond those who have worked on both MCU and DCEU movies, but as Zhao said, we never know what the future holds. Perhaps Gunn and Zhao will find a way to bring them together on a much larger scale someday.
