Developer Games People Play from Norway announced their upcoming game Killer in the Cabin, a social deduction game like Among Us that looks a lot like Friday the 13th: The Game. The new studio Games People Play was founded by developers from Artplant, the studio that created games like Block N Load and Battlestar Galactica Online. With the recent news of Friday the 13th’s dedicated servers shutting down amid litigation, players might be looking for a new game to host their murderous cabin in the woods gameplay.

Among Us has become hard to avoid ever since it exploded in popularity during the last year and a half. No other game has been able to replicate the success that it had, even though many social deduction games have come onto the scene since then. In a more broad sense, a few horror co-op games, like Back 4 Blood and Phasmophobia, have risen to popularity lately. But those games all have a clearly designated enemy, rather than it being mixed in among friends.

Thanks to the new Killer in the Cabin announcement trailer posted on the game’s YouTube channel, players can get a glimpse at what to expect. A microphone is required to play, as voice chat is an integral part of the experience. The killer should focus on stealthy kills to avoid detection, but avoid appearing suspiciously quiet. The trailer showed a player poisoning a fish with cyanide before allowing another player to use it to cook soup. Aside from that, players can find weapons and even strangle other players in their sleep, suggesting that survival mechanics like hunger and sleep are likely going to be important factors.

Killer in the Cabin is planned for early access on Steam on November 11th along with a full release next year, but Games People Play also announced a 24-hour closed beta on October 31st, which can give anyone who signs up a sneak peek at the game. Players can vote out whoever they think the killer is, regardless of if they are correct or not of course. It’s also estimated that each game will last about fifteen minutes, so hopefully, the first person to be killed won’t have to wait around too long for the next game.

Killer in the Cabin still has a few weeks before it comes to early access, and it's unclear how long after that the full version will release. The trailer shows off some interesting and creative tactics that a more simple game like Among Us wouldn’t have, but only time will tell if it manages to have the same charm and popularity that even Among Us itself struggles to replicate. On the bright side, at least it won’t have to deal with the same copyright issues as Friday the 13th.
