Most Windows users probably know by now that Microsoft's original approach for the Windows 10 rollout included a two-step process that required them to make a reservation for the new OS and then wait for the update to arrive on the PCs.

Now that the full swing of Windows 10 rollout has passed, Microsoft is looking for new ways to provide Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 users with more relevant ways to upgrade to the new version of the OS.

In an official statement earlier today, Microsoft's Terry Myerson announced that his company would soon be publishing Windows 10 as an “Optional Update” in Windows Update for all those who have yet to upgrade to the new OS.

“Recommended Update” from early 2016

According to Myerson, early next year, Microsoft will re-categorize Windows 10 as a “Recommended Update,” which will affect the way the upgrade process kicks in, either manually or automatically.

Still, regardless of the user's Windows Update settings, before the upgrade changes the OS installed on your device, you will be clearly prompted to choose whether or not to continue.

Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 users who decided to continue with the upgrade to Windows 10 will have 31 days to go back to their previous version of the OS, if they are not content with what Microsoft did with Windows 10.

Myerson also recommends Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 users with metered connection to leave the automatic updates setting enabled due to “the constant risk of internet threats.” Those who decide to turn this feature off should try and manually check for updates as frequently as possible.

“Windows 10 will not automatically download updates on a metered connection unless there is a security issue addressed within the update.

“In addition, Windows 10 contains a number of features for those on metered connections, including monitoring data usage by application and setting data usage quotas,” added Myerson.
