Nowadays, it seems as if each new day brings word of a new franchise set to get the reboot treatment. For that reason, it was probably only a matter of time until this trend reached the aptly titled 1994-2001 animated series ReBoot.
We’ve previously heard that a new version of the show was in the works and aiming to update the now-dated references to technology. The original show was set in a computer system known as Mainframe populated by programs and viruses that served as the show’s various heroes and villains, respectively. Now we have new details on what the revival series will entail.
Corus Entertainment announced that it has officially given the green light for Mainframe Entertainment to produce 26 half-hour episodes of ReBoot: The Guardian Code, a live-action/computer-animated series that will serve as a “reimagined” version of the original show. The new series is intended to be the launchpad for a multi-platform plan, though it is unclear what other projects may be involved to extend the ReBoot franchise.
As expected, The Guardian Code is looking to revamp the technological-driven concept for today’s generation. Here’s how the press release describes the new show:
“Transcending age groups with appeal to kids, tweens and teens, ReBoot: the Guardian Code is an adventure-comedy series about four teens (Austin, Parker, Grey and Tamra) who discover that they’re next-gen Guardians with a mission to save the world, by defending it in cyberspace. The Internet revolutionized the world, but it also left it vulnerable to attack. With the help of VERA, the last surviving cyberbeing from the original Guardian Program, our heroes stream into cyberspace where they use their awesome code-based powers to battle viruses that have been unleashed by a ruthless hacker. Known only as the Sourcerer, he seeks to rule the world by controlling cyberspace. Original fans of the show will be happy to hear that Megabyte will be back and he’s getting a major upgrade. ReBoot will showcase leading edge technologies and bring coding into the mainstream for kids.
When Austin, Parker, Grey and Tamra are not trying to stop viruses from overloading a nuclear power station, or remotely opening a dam to flood a city, or playing Criss Cross Crash Hour with a city’s transportation grid, our heroes are being typical teens: arguing with their parents over curfews; dealing with crushes; or trying to avoid getting suspended for skipping class when they’re really on a cyber mission to save the world!”
In many ways, ReBoot was a pioneer for the small screen, as it was the first fully computer-animated television series. However, in today’s world, such striking visuals have become commonplace, and the show will have to drastically switch things up in order to stay true to its cutting-edge premise.
Judging by the above description, the new ReBoot sounds like it may be more in line with something along the lines of Power Rangers (another 1990s property set for an update) in that it focuses on teens who must balance super-heroic duties with everyday lives. Likely, this approach is intended to keep the new series’ budget under control and, furthermore, to make its concept a bit more palatable to new audiences.
