Australia tightened their grip on the second Investec Ashes Test, ending day three with a lead of 362 over England after opting not to enforce the follow-on at Lord’s.

Alastair Cook was dismissed for 96 as the hosts, who had started the morning session on 85-4 after a top-order collapse, were bowled out for 312 in their first innings.
England’s captain played on to Mitchell Marsh, who had also dismissed Ben Stokes in a similar fashion for 87 earlier in the day, to miss out on recording his first Ashes hundred on home soil.

Alastair Cook: Saw his hopes of a century dashed just before tea on day three

Choosing to bat again rather than offer their opponents the chance to have another go, Australia saw their opening pairing of Chris Rogers (44 not out) and David Warner, who finished up on 60 having been dropped by Adam Lyth before getting off the mark, put on an unbroken stand of 108 through to the close.
With the forecast for Sunday suggesting rain may arrive earlier than initially expected, England are facing a gloomy outlook as they bid to save the game and cling on to their 1-0 series lead.

They had been given hope prior to lunch on Saturday, courtesy of a fifth-wicket partnership worth 145.
With his skipper calmly going about his job at the other end, Stokes played positively at a venue where he made 92 and 101 in the Test against New Zealand earlier this year.
However, a chance to get his name on the honours board at the famous ground for a second time disappeared when the Durham all-rounder chopped on to Marsh, the deflection knocking his off stump clean out of the ground.

Jos Buttler made 13 before falling early in the afternoon, walking off after feathering a catch through to wicketkeeper Peter Nevill from off-spinner Nathan Lyon. Umpire Kumar Dharmasena initially turned down the appeals, only to then nod in agreement when he quickly realised Buttler was already heading back to the pavilion.
But, it was the wicket of Cook that delighted the tourists the most. The left-hander looked certain to record his first three-figure score against Australia since Sydney in 2011, only to be bowled trying to drive Marsh through the covers.

Although Moeen Ali and Stuart Broad made 39 and 21 respectively, England’s tail subsided to the second new ball.
Visiting captain Michael Clarke resisted the temptation to bowl again, instead sending Rogers and Warner out to the middle. The latter made the most of the opportunity to have another go on the benign surface, though only after Lyth had let an edge burst through his hands at fifth slip.
