Kate Winslet plays a violent and oblivious dictator in the trailer for The Regime, an upcoming HBO satire series. When she last headlined a series for the prestige cable channel, Winslet garnered waves of praise for helping to reinvigorate the tropes of the small town murder-mystery with Mare of Easttown, winning an Emmy and a Golden Globe for her lead performance as a local detective who can barely manage the competing strains of her professional and personal life.

The Oscar winner now takes on a very different kind of starring role, as seen in the trailer for The Regime, which was formerly known by its working title The Palace.

In the trailer, which was unveiled at the presentation of the rebranded Max streaming service, Winslet's character takes center stage. At one point, she asks that her people need to be respected, and in response, she's told that she needs to demonstrate credibility. This is juxtaposed with scenes of some very stressful situations. The dark comedy will debut in 2024 on both HBO and Max.

What To Expect From The Regime

The logline for The Regime reveals that the focus will be on "one year within the walls of the palace of a modern European regime as it begins to unravel." Winslet is joined in the cast by Emmy winner Martha Plimpton, who plays the U.S. representative in the trailer. Other cast members in the series include Matthias Schoenaerts, Guillaume Gallienne, Danny Webb, David Bamber, Henry Goodman, Stanley Townsend, Louie Mynett, Rory Keenan, Karl Markovics, and Pippa Haywood. Oscar nominee Andrea Riseborough and Hugh Grant also round up the cast.

Behind the camera, Will Tracey serves as a writer, executive producer, and showrunner. Tracey has previously worked on Succession and the hit satire The Menu. Oscar nominee Stephen Frears and Emmy winner Jessica Hobbs will serve as directors. Frears received an Oscar nomination for directing The Queen, while Hobbs worked on The Crown. So, in terms of subject, The Regime is assembling those familiar with the genre of politics and satire.

The Regime is Winslet's fourth collaboration with HBO. Along with Mare of Easttown, she also led the award-winning Mildred Pierce and is set to produce another project for the channel. Judging by the talent involved and their familiarity with the subject matter, this upcoming satire is well-positioned to be one more chapter of a successful partnership.
