Pennyworth, the Batman prequel series focusing on the younger days of Bruce Wayne’s butler Alfred Pennyworth, is set to return on HBO Max for season 3 in 2022. Starring The Imitation Game’s Jack Bannon as the titular character, Pennyworth explores the life of Batman’s trusted butler and ex-SAS soldier in an alternative universe loosely based on 1960s London. The series also features Ben Aldridge as Thomas Wayne and Emma Paetz as Martha Kane, Bruce Wayne’s future parents.

Originally created for the Epix network, Pennyworth has garnered rave reviews over its first two series and has added several surprising new twists to the Batman mythos. Aside from establishing Thomas Wayne as an operative for the CIA and Martha as a freedom-fighting revolutionary, the show shocked fans in a surprise twist in the season 2 finale. Throughout the last season, it was revealed that Martha was pregnant with Thomas’s child, which many fans thought alluded to the introduction of a baby Bruce. In a serious departure from existing comic lore, however, Martha gives birth to a baby girl suggesting that at some point Batman had a sister.

Most recently, at DC FanDome, Bannon and Alridge joined the event’s all-star lineup to share a few behind-the-scenes looks at production on the upcoming third season and confirmed previous reports that Pennyworth will be moving to HBO Max in 2022. The first two seasons will also make the transition across to the streaming platform earlier in the year ahead of the season 3 debut. Aldridge says that season 3 will “dive in deeper into the lives of Alfred, Martha, Thomas, Bet Sykes, Lucius Fox, and all the other Pennyworth characters.” Bannon also let a potential spoiler slip during the segment, suggesting that there would be a five-year time jump between seasons 2 and 3.

With HBO Max quickly becoming the central repository for all things DC, it comes as no surprise that the streamer would swoop in to pick the series up for its third outing. With rival Marvel Studios quickly turning the Disney+ streaming platform into a central repository for all of its content, there’s little wonder that Warner Bros. would be looking to do the same for the DC brand. With several original DC films and series slated to hit HBO Max in the near future, like Batgirl, Blue Beetle, Black Canary, and Peacemaker, Pennyworth is certain to be right at home on the platform.

One thing devout fans of the series will be looking to see is how the introduction of an older sibling will continue to change and adapt the Batman mythology. With Bannon’s promised 5-year time jump, it would seem audiences will have a chance to meet Batman’s older sister as a young girl and even potentially see an infant Bruce on the horizon. However, one thing is for certain; with the surprise twists the first two seasons have already delivered, Pennyworth season 3 is guaranteed to keep fans guessing.
