Bethesda has released a free next-gen upgrade for the newly released remaster of Quake, adding support for up to 4K resolution and 120fps gameplay to the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and Xbox Series S. Amid rumors of a new Quake installment, the unforeseen remaster was revealed and launched during Quake's 25th-anniversary event at Quakecon 2021 on last-generation consoles. The next-gen release was however delayed, with the announcement promising that it would be coming soon.
The classic 1996 FPS's 25th anniversary enhanced edition was released in August and garnered an overwhelmingly positive reception by allowing players a chance to experience the iconic game in all its glory. Coming upgraded with 4K visuals, enhanced models, and colored dynamic lighting, the Quake remaster also introduced new features, as well as returning ones. This included the return of the original soundtrack featuring Trent Reznor, two new Quake expansions from MachineGames, official mod support featuring Quake 64, crossplay for its multiplayer/co-op modes, and achievements/trophies for completionists with a nostalgia tendency.
Revealed in an official blog post on Bethesda's website, Quake's 25th anniversary enhanced edition is now available for free as a next-gen upgrade for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. This means that players who purchased the PlayStation 4 or Xbox One version of the game are eligible for a free upgrade within the same console family, and Xbox Game Pass subscribers will automatically receive the update. As for the upgrade, the next-gen version will receive improved framerates and visuals with 4K/120fps for both consoles along with console-specific additions. PlayStation 5 users will be getting DualSense adaptive trigger and integrated speaker support for better immersion, while Xbox owners get Play Anywhere support allowing them to cross-save and unlock the Windows PC version of the Quake remaster for free, a feature unavailable for the PS4/PS5 version.

After DOOM helped popularize multiplayer deathmatches in 1993, Quake was launched focusing on online multiplayer and its acclaim helped Id Software create their own convention. Hosted for the first time in 1996, Quakecon created one of the very first strong competitive scenes that continues to exist today, with the yearly event officially turning 25 this year.
