Seth Grahame-Smith, the showrunner for the upcoming HBO Max live-action Green Lantern series, says the show will be absolutely gigantic. The series will feature a number of Green Lantern Corps members from the DC comics, including Guy Gardner (Finn Wittrock) and Alan Scott (Jeremy Irvine), though the two most famous Green Lanterns – Hal Jordan and John Stewart – have yet to be announced. As of now, the Green Lantern series has no official release date.

The recent history of live-action Green Lantern stories isn’t exactly stellar, which puts burdens of both pressure and potential on the HBO Max series. The Ryan Reynolds-led Green Lantern film received middling reviews, and though the John Stewart version of the character was meant to appear in Zack Snyder’s DCEU films, those plans were ultimately cancelled by Warner Bros. Even the Arrowverse – a franchise that’s featured loads of DC characters both major and minor – has barely touched on the Green Lantern lore.

The HBO Max Green Lantern series has the potential to finally give the comics their due in live-action, and according to the series’ showrunner, it has a lot going for it. In a recent interview with Collider, Grahame-Smith said that the show would be “gigantic” and claimed that while it will still be some time before fans get any real look at the series, development is going quite well. On all other details, however, Grahame-Smith kept quiet. Read his full quote below.

“Yeah, that show is gigantic. It has taken quite a bit of time to get to this point and it’s just a big, big undertaking. It’s going really well. All I can say is that it’s going really well and there are gonna be Green Lanterns in it, and it’s gonna be on HBO Max.

“I’ll admit, I wasn’t like a huge comic book kid. I was a huge movie kid. And so, my introduction to DC Comics came through the ‘89 Batman movie. When that movie came out, I was like, "Oh, my God, Batman is the coolest," and I started reading Batman comic books. But Green Lantern is something that, to be honest with you, just came to me later, by way of just talking about doing the show. The possibility of doing the show led me down a deep dive of Green Lantern lore. We’ll see. It’s gonna be awhile before the world gets to see that, but we are very, very busy at work, as we speak.”

It's already been revealed that the HBO Max show will feature multiple Green Lanterns from multiple eras, creating a story that spans decades. That’s an ambitious pitch for a character who has yet to find any real success in live-action, but it could be just what Green Lantern needs to finally deliver a hit. In addition to Wittrock’s Guy Gardner and Irvine’s Alan Scott, Jessica Cruz and Simon Baz have been confirmed for the series, and there’s potential for many more classic comic characters to appear as well.

Given the nature of the Green Lantern Corps as an intergalactic organization, the new HBO Max show should be gigantic in its geographical scope as well. The battles fought between the Green, Yellow, and Red Lantern Corps are legendary in the DC comics, and with a large enough budget, they could be brought to life spectacularly. It may indeed be a long time before fans get a glimpse at the HBO Max Green Lantern series, but it sounds like it might finally do the character justice in live-action when it arrives.
