The Indiana Jones 5 release date has been delayed to 2023. After Disney acquired Lucasfilm in 2012, they wasted no time moving forward with a full slate of new Star Wars projects, adding a number of feature films and TV shows to the galaxy far, far away. However, progress on Lucasfilm's other famous franchise, Indiana Jones, has been very slow. Indiana Jones 5 was first announced back in 2016, but since then has encountered a number of problems, going through multiple writers and even a director change.

At long last, things seemed to have settled on the Indiana Jones 5 front, as the film announced its principal cast and began production earlier this year. Despite star Harrison Ford suffering a shoulder injury on-set, director James Mangold confirmed over the summer he was still shooting scenes. It's unknown how much longer Indiana Jones 5 has to go before it wraps, but the cast and crew just got plenty of more time to complete the film.

Disney announced Indiana Jones 5 has been delayed to June 30, 2023. It was part of sweeping alterations the studio made to their upcoming film slate, which also included delaying six Marvel movies and removing untitled films from the schedule.

Variety notes Disney's widespread changes are "related to production" as opposed to box office prospects. In Indiana Jones 5's case, the tentpole is still in the midst of principal photography. It's unknown if Ford's injury played a role in this. While Mangold was able to move forward with filming, if Ford was forced to miss an extended period of time while recovering, it would have limited what Mangold could shoot. The good news is Ford is back at work, as evidenced by the latest Indiana Jones 5 set photos hinting at a time-travel plot. Barring any unforeseen setbacks, hopefully the movie wraps in the not-too-distant future.

The delay is another bump in Indiana Jones 5's road to the big screen, but it should be beneficial in the long run. Mangold now has another year to lock final picture, instead of having to rush to meet the previous July 2022 release date. An Indiana Jones movie is a massive undertaking, and post-production looks like it will be extensive with de-aging visual effects. Considering most people were disappointed with Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, there seems to be a focus on making sure this new installment is a proper sendoff for Ford's archeologist. Should this new date stick, 2023 will be a big year for Lucasfilm with Indiana Jones 5 and Star Wars movie Rogue Squadron opening within six months of each other.
