Filmmaker Kevin Smith has revealed that his upcoming Clerks 3 will officially release in 2022. Fifteen years after its last sequel, the Clerks franchise continues to be a favorite of many Smith fans, and the impact the first film made in 1994 can still be felt today. Though times have changed in terms of how films are made and the equipment available to aspiring young filmmakers, Smith’s work is an inspiration to independent cinema everywhere.

The arrival of Clerks introduced not just a cast of characters that played into the zeitgeist of the time, but it also gave the world Jay and Silent Bob, characters played by Smith and real-life best friend, Jason Mewes. In the years after Clerks’ release, the profile of the two stoner anti-heroes increased substantially, resulting in numerous cameos, films of their own, and everything from figurines to video games. But while these things were great in their own way, what many Smith fans have consistently wanted has been more Clerks films. After deciding to follow up the film in 2006, Smith went through an extensive period of wanting to make a third installment but was repeatedly thwarted. The biggest setback was the filmmaker’s heart-attack in 2018, but in the years since, Smith has not only completely changed his lifestyle, but also become even more dedicated to his work.

At present, not only is Clerks 3 finally a reality, with filming having taken place over the summer, but Smith has at last revealed when fans will be able to see it. Relaying the information recently via his official Twitter account, Smith referenced the premiere of the original Clerks, 27 years ago on October 19, 1994, before stating “And since I still can’t let it go… CLERKS III in 2022!!!” The announcement marks the first clear indication of when the new comedy will arrive. Though it’s not entirely surprising that Clerks 3 is set to arrive in 2022, it’s still great to hear that the long wait for the sequel is nearly at an end. This time around, the film promises some big changes – one of which involves Jay and Silent Bob having gone into business at the RST Video store – the shop which neighbors the Quick Stop. Judging by previous images and information about the duo’s new business venture, it appears they’ve turned the VHS/video game rental shop into a dispensary as well, highlighting the state of New Jersey’s real-life and recently adopted legalization of marijuana.

In addition to Jay and Silent Bob’s pursuits, Clerks 3 focuses on Randal, who uses the Quick Stop as the location for an independent film. The similarity in the plotline and Smith’s own life is intentional, with the sequel mirroring his path to success after scraping together enough money to shoot the original Clerks at the Quick Stop. Back then, Smith was an employee of the shop, and his return there this summer to shoot Clerks 3 seems to have been a truly memorable time for the 51-year-old. Fans are hoping that the new film will also provide them with great memories and new highlights as 2022 approaches.
