The second trailer for The Batman sees Robert Pattinson as the titular hero deliver a short speech about fear, and it proves why he's the perfect Batman. The trailer was released at DC FanDome 2021, and offers a clear indication of what to expect from Matt Reeve's upcoming film, including a better look at Robert Pattinson's Batman. Although the actor is arguably still best known for his role in the Twilight saga, the footage shows him as a very different type of nocturnal creature: the iconic Caped Crusader.

The trailer shows off a little of the film's action, in which Pattinson's Batman appears to be far more brutal than other iterations of the character, as well as a better look at Colin Farrell's Oswald Cobblepot. Pattinson (as Batman) is also heard growling about how his Bat-Signal is more than just a call - "it's a warning" - and explaining to Jeffrey Wright's Commissioner Gordon that "fear is a tool". As well as giving the Bat-Signal a much darker meaning, this exchange also highlights just what Pattinson will bring to the role that others before him have not yet fully achieved.

The speech, while short, highlights that Pattinson's Batman will be one that makes use of the darker aspects of the character, and if the rest of the trailer is anything to go by, he's built a reputation among Gotham's criminals as a ruthlessly brutal and almost nightmarish figure. While other iterations of the character have attempted to use these same elements to varying degrees, it appears so far that they will be the cornerstone of Pattinson's version of Batman. This actually sets the actor up to play the perfect Batman, using the character's darker aspects to set up a vigilante and a Gotham City very different from previous versions.

The exact details of The Batman's approach to its titular character may still be mostly speculative, but the trailer indicates that he's much angrier and more vicious than previous incarnations. The tone of Reeves' film seems to have borrowed the more grounded aspects of Nolan's award-winning trilogy but amplified the character's darkness, which is actually far more in line with some of Batman's most iconic comic book arcs. However, Pattinson's character, while still drawing inspiration from these various sources, appears to be a much less heroic figure, and that's something that not only sets The Batman apart from, but quite possible above, previous iterations.

The trailer also shows off a scene in which Batman brutally fights his way down a hallway, which evidences that Pattinson's Dark Knight takes his speech about inciting fear very seriously. Even while being fired at by armed enemies, Batman walks slowly towards them and wipes them out with effortless grace. It's a moment that appears to personify The Batman's protagonist - an inhuman hunter that is willing to toy with his enemies before viciously dispatching them. This version seems to move away from the idea of demonstrating how heroic Batman is, and instead leans further into the characterization of a violent vigilante, something that other versions have played around with but not yet fully embraced.

The Batman trailer is stuffed full of gorgeously gothic glimpses into Matt Reeves' Gotham, and Robert Pattinson is at its center as the darkest version of Batman yet. The trailer even hints that this Batman may be willing to kill, showing him tasering a gang member at point-blank range - something which would certainly cement him as the most brutal and ruthlessly frightening interpretation of the Dark Knight. Early glimpses at Pattinson's turn under the cowl are already causing much anticipation among fans, and it just might be that The Batman delivers the perfect version of its titular character.
