The first trailer for Sony’s upcoming live-action movie adaptation of Naughty Dog’s video game franchise, Uncharted, is rumored to drop this week. Uncharted was stuck in development purgatory for a large part of the past decade. In 2020, it was announced that Venom director, Ruben Fleischer, would helm the film with Art Marcum and Matt Holloway (Iron Man) writing the screenplay. Production on the film took place throughout 2020 and, following multiple delays due to the Covid-19 pandemic, will finally release in theaters on February 18, 2022.

Essentially serving as a prequel to the games, Uncharted will follow Tom Holland as fortune hunter Nathan Drake alongside Mark Wahlberg as his mentor Victor “Sully” Sullivan. The film will focus on the early days of the pair’s adventures together and also star Antonio Banderas, Tati Gabrielle, and Sophia Taylor Ali as Chloe Frazer, a love interest of Nathan’s in the games. Earlier this year, Sony premiered the first footage from the film at CinemaCon including Sully at an auction, Nathan entering a cave-like area and then falling out of a cargo plane — images reminiscent of the video game franchise.

According to a scoop via Daniel “DanielIRPK” Richtman on Patreon (via Comicbook), Sony Pictures will apparently release the first trailer for Uncharted this Thursday, October 21st. That being said, fans should take this information at face value as no official information about the trailer's release has been announced by Sony. However, with the movie set to release in a matter of months, it would make sense for a trailer to drop soon.

Holland’s other blockbuster, Marvel Studios/Sony’s upcoming Spider-Man: No Way Home, has likely influenced how Sony is approaching promotion for Uncharted. Now that some of the hype surrounding No Way Home’s first trailer has died slightly down, Sony could build on Holland’s momentum by teasing yet another blockbuster right before No Way Home’s rumored second trailer and then release on December 17th. If No Way Home is the end of Holland’s Spider-Man franchise (but not his tenure as the webslinger), Uncharted could represent his next series of films.

Plot details for the Uncharted movie have been kept under wraps, and it remains to be seen if it can live up to its Indiana Jones-caliber source material. The film's casting has been criticized by some fans, and the first footage sees Nathan thrown into the realm of fortune-hunting rather than eased into it. If the film commits the recurring cardinal sin of video game adaptations and prioritizes the action over pacing, character, and overall story, Uncharted could be in trouble. Longtime fans will inevitably get a better sense of what the film has to offer when its trailer drops (hopefully) very soon.
